TGL New York Team Bought By Mets Owner Steve Cohen

Financier and New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has acquired the founding rights to the New York team in the upstart golf league, TGL (The Golf League), co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Cohen’s family office, Cohen Private Ventures, will manage the team, which will debut in TGL’s inaugural season starting in January 2024.

TGL is a high-tech golf league set to launch in 2024, featuring top players like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Justin Thomas. The league operates in partnership with the PGA Tour, allowing players to participate in both leagues, with complementary event timing.

While Cohen will own the rights to the New York team, all TGL events will occur in Florida. However, the league plans to engage the New York market through events, community outreach, and technology-driven fan engagement. A media deal for the league is anticipated to be announced soon.

Steve Cohen, known for his ownership of the New York Mets and as the chair of asset management firm Point72, sees the addition of a New York team in TGL as an opportunity to engage and market to New York fans.

TGL’s ownership groups include Arthur Blank, Fenway Sports Group, Alexis Ohanian, Serena and Venus Williams, Stephen Curry, Lewis Hamilton, Alex Morgan, Tony Romo, Josh Allen, Justin Timberlake, and now Steve Cohen.

Cohen purchased the New York Mets in 2020 and serves as the chair and CEO of the team, although they have faced challenges in the 2023 season despite having the highest payroll in the league.

TGL’s launch comes at a pivotal time in professional golf, with ongoing discussions and potential Congressional scrutiny of the proposed merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, a rival golf league.

The death of individual sports is here and even Giannis Antetokoumpo recently bought a TGL team.
