GameAbove Sports, a business development and strategic investment entity with a focus on sports, has announced the acquisition of the fourth BIG3 franchise. The new team will be based in Detroit and will represent the State of Michigan in the 2025 season. The ownership group, led by Founder and Chairman Keith J. Stone, includes prominent figures from the region with extensive experience in business, operations, and sports.
Notable members include NBA Hall of Famer and BIG3 Coach George Gervin, two-time NFL Pro-Bowler and Super Bowl Champion T.J. Lang, Joe Januszewski, Karen LeVert, Dan McClory, Skyler Stone, Corey Welch, and Anthony Tomey, co-founder of Born in Detroit apparel. Former NBA point guard Earl Boykins will also be part of the organization.
“We are excited to bring a BIG3 franchise to Detroit,” said Gervin. “My involvement with the BIG3 over the past few seasons has shown me the league’s significant growth and appeal. Detroit’s rich sports history makes it an ideal market for the BIG3. Get ready for next summer!”
This announcement follows the earlier acquisitions of the LA, Miami, and Houston BIG3 franchises. The league is currently in its seventh season, continuing to tour nationwide and reach millions of fans through various platforms.
“I am thrilled to announce the sale of our Detroit team to this incredible group of investors and philanthropists,” said BIG3 CEO and co-founder, Ice Cube. “GameAbove Sports embodies the values of the BIG3 and has an impressive community outreach program that will elevate the Young3 initiative. Working with George Gervin has been a privilege, and I look forward to collaborating with GameAbove Sports to bring BIG3 Detroit to life next season.”
Backed by CapStone Holdings Inc., GameAbove Sports is committed to investing in sports franchises and leagues worldwide. The company focuses on acquiring minority and majority ownership positions in established franchises, promoting technological advancements within the sports industry.
“We are enthusiastic about the BIG3 and the progress made by Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz,” said Stone. “At GameAbove Sports, we seek innovative ways to diversify our portfolio. The BIG3 offers an excellent opportunity to invest in an emerging form of basketball. Our team is eager to support and lead Detroit and Michigan’s presence in the league.”
GameAbove Sports’ acquisition of the BIG3 franchise aligns with its strong presence in Southeast Michigan. Launched as a philanthropic brand under CapStone Holdings Inc. in November 2019, GameAbove has made significant contributions to various causes, including social impact initiatives, youth sports, education, and scholarships in the region.
