Ryan Reynolds Invests in Mexican Soccer Team Necaxa

American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have recently become minority stakeholders in Necaxa, a prominent Mexican football club, with the intent to extend the successful approach they applied at Wrexham Football Club in Wales, which they purchased in September 2020.

Joining an existing cohort of investors who began supporting Necaxa in 2021, Reynolds and McElhenney are in company with celebrities like Eva Longoria, Justin Verlander, Kate Upton, and Odell Beckham Jr. This group, as reported by “Variety,” aims to elevate their global sports profile and tap into the growing market for football content across television and streaming services.

Reynolds, known for his roles in “Deadpool” and “Green Lantern,” and McElhenney, famous for his portrayal of Mac in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” acquired Wrexham from England’s fifth-tier football division. Since then, they have celebrated Wrexham’s promotion first to the fourth division and then to the third.

Reynolds recently shared his emotions on social media, expressing his joy over Wrexham’s progress: “A few years ago, if you had told me I would be crying tears of joy over a soccer match in North Wales, I wouldn’t have believed it. Congratulations to Wrexham. Let’s make the city proud! This is the journey of our lives.”

Unlike Wrexham, Necaxa already competes in Mexico’s top league from their base in Aguascalientes, just north of Mexico City. The big question now is whether these new investors can propel Necaxa to revisit its former glory.
